What is CCTV?

CCTV stands for closed-circuit television. It is a video surveillance system that uses cameras to transmit video footage to a specific set of monitors or recording devices. CCTV signals are transmitted to a limited number of viewers or devices, hence called “closed circuit”. CCTV systems are commonly used for security purposes, including monitoring buildings, public places, streets, and private properties. It helps prevent crime, monitor activities, and provide evidence in case of incidents.

Key components of a typical CCTV system include:

  1. Cameras: Capture video footage. These come in several types: dome, bullet, PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) or wireless cameras.
  2. Monitors: Display the video feed, often in a control room.
  3. Recorders: Store the footage, depending on the system setup, such as a DVR (digital video recorder) or NVR (network video recorder).
  4. Cable/wireless Transmission: Method of transmitting the video signal from the camera to the monitor or recorder.
  5. Power Supply: Powers the cameras and other equipment.

CCTV is widely used in places like shopping malls, airports, streets, businesses, and even homes for surveillance, monitoring traffic, and improving security.
